Bio: Professor White trained in medicine and public health, and has a longstanding interest in behaviours in relation to health. Over the last 30 years, he has undertaken research on smoking, alcohol consumption, physical activity and diet, as well as health professional behaviour, including studies of aetiology and determinants, and the development, evaluation and translation of interventions to promote health. He also has a longstanding interest in social inequalities in health and health behaviours.

He presently leads research on the upstream, population-level determinants of diet and related chronic non-communicable diseases in the MRC Epidemiology Unit and Centre for Diet and Activity Research at the University of Cambridge. He is Director of the National Institute of Health Research (NIHR) Public Health Research Programme and a member of the MRC’s Population Health Sciences Group. He is co-investigator in the NIHR School for Public Health Research, and the Department of Health & Social Care’s Policy Research Unit for Public Health. He holds a visiting chair in public health at Newcastle University where, until 2014, he was Director of Fuse, UKCRC Centre for Translational Research in Public Health.
